Carbohydrate drinks or snacks have been shown to improve performance in events lasting longer than 90 minutes, and many athletes think they can help in somewhat shorter competitions as well. A new study from researchers in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand shows that this may be true, but only because the athletes think it is.

In an article last month in the journal Science & Medicine in Sports & Exercise, the researchers said they had recruited 43 competitive cyclists into a laboratory for two simulated 40-kilometer races.

During the first session the cyclists were given only water, to establish a performance baseline. In the second they were randomly given either a carbohydrate drink or an indistinguishable placebo. Some were told what they were getting and others were not.

Those told they were getting carbohydrates improved their performances slightly, by about 4 percent. Those who were getting the carbohydrate but didn't know it had their performances slip by an average of 0.3 percent, the study said.

The authors wrote that they would advise athletes facing an hourlong competition to have a carbohydrate-rich meal two to three hours ahead of time. "We will also tell them that a drink containing carbohydrates consumed during the race may enhance their performance by an extra few percent," they wrote. "Should we tell them that any enhancement they get will probably be due to a placebo effect?"
